Plastering job guide
Holes, cracks & plaster repairs.
Plaster repairs fix holes, dents, cracks, damaged corners and opened joints in walls and ceilings. The damaged area is cut back or filled, set in several coats and sanded flush with the surrounding surface, so it is ready for paint. It suits homeowners, landlords and anyone preparing a room to repaint.
The job in context
Small repairs and larger damaged sections need different preparation. A close-up photograph shows the damage; a wider view shows its position in the room. Describe whether it is a one-off impact, a joint that has opened or a crack that has changed over time.
What to discuss
- Holes, dents and impact damage
- Damaged corners and opened joints
- Wall and ceiling sections needing a patch
Common questions
What is included in a plaster repair?
Preparing the damaged area, patching or replacing a small section of board where needed, then setting it in coats and sanding it flush, ready for paint. Painting is arranged separately.
How long does it take, and what affects the price?
Each coat of setting compound has to dry before the next, so even a small patch usually needs more than one visit. The size and number of repairs, whether board has to be replaced, the ceiling height and access affect the time and the quote.
What should I send?
Your suburb, a close-up and a wider photo of each repair, rough sizes, and whether the damage has changed since you first noticed it. Cracks that keep coming back are worth mentioning.
Signs you need plaster repairs
Hairline cracks often appear in corners or above door frames as a house settles. Larger gaps may open at the joints where plasterboard sheets meet. These signs usually indicate that the internal tape has failed or the building has shifted slightly.
Dents and holes from furniture or door handles are common in high-traffic areas. You might also notice bubbling paint or soft spots in the ceiling. These are often signs of previous leaks or moisture that have damaged the core of the board.
The repair process step by step
We start by removing loose material and cleaning the damaged area. For small holes, we use a filler. For larger gaps, we cut out the damaged section and install a new piece of plasterboard that fits tightly against the existing frame.
The joints are then taped and covered with setting compound. This is applied in several thin layers. Each layer must dry completely before we sand it back and apply the next coat to create a flat surface.
Preparing the room for work
Clear the area around the repair to give us plenty of room to move. Move furniture away from the walls and remove any wall-mounted items like pictures or shelving. This prevents dust from settling on your belongings.
Cover floors and remaining furniture with plastic sheets or drop cloths. While we manage the application, sanding produces fine dust that spreads easily. Clearing the space helps the work move along without interruptions.
Factors that affect the job
Ceiling height and access play a large role in how a job is handled. Work on high ceilings requires more equipment and time for setup. The condition of the timber framing behind the wall also affects how we secure new patches.
Drying time is a major factor. Humidity and temperature can change how quickly the compound sets. We cannot apply a second coat until the first is dry, which means some repairs require multiple visits to the property.
Information for an accurate quote
When requesting a quote, send photos that show the scale of the damage. A close-up image helps us see the type of crack, while a wider shot shows us the height and location of the repair within the room.
Include rough measurements of the affected area. Mention if the damage was caused by a one-off impact or if it is a recurring issue. Knowing if there was a water leak helps us decide if the board needs a full replacement.
