Plastering job guide

Cornices & decorative plaster details.

Cornice work covers installing new cornice where walls meet the ceiling and repairing damaged lengths, corners and joins in existing cornice. The cornice is fixed, joined and set so the line runs straight and the corners are neat, ready for paint. It suits renovations, new ceilings and older homes with damaged cornices.

Text your suburb, the room or surface, approximate size and photos if useful.

The job in context

Cornice work can mean installing a profile through a new room or repairing a short damaged section. A photograph of the whole profile and its corners is more useful than a product name alone. For ceiling roses or older decorative plaster, send a reference so the detail and proposed work can be discussed.

What to discuss

  • New cornice installation
  • Cornice joins, corners and damaged lengths

Common questions

What is included in cornice work?

Fixing the cornice, mitring the corners, setting the joins and gaps, and sanding it ready for paint. For a repair, a short damaged length can be replaced and joined to the existing cornice when a matching profile is available.

How long does it take, and what affects the price?

Cornice is fixed with adhesive and the joins are set once it holds, so a room usually needs more than one visit. The number of rooms, corners and joins, the ceiling height and how hard the existing profile is to match affect the time and the quote.

What should I send?

Your suburb, the rooms involved, a close photo of the existing cornice profile and a photo of each damaged section. A measurement of the profile's height and depth helps with matching.

Signs you need cornice repairs

Cracks often appear at the joins where the wall meets the ceiling. These can be caused by the house settling or changes in temperature. Small gaps may form at the corners if the original fixing has loosened over time.

Water damage is another common issue. Yellow or brown stains on the cornice usually indicate a leak from the roof or plumbing. In these cases, the damaged section often needs to be removed and replaced to prevent further sagging.

The installation process

We start by measuring the room and cutting the lengths to fit. The cornice is fixed to the wall and ceiling using adhesive. Each corner is mitred to ensure the angles align correctly.

Once the adhesive has set, we apply jointing compound to the gaps and joins. This is sanded back and repeated until the surface is flat. The final result is a smooth line that is ready for a painter.

Preparing the room

Plastering creates dust during the sanding stage. It is helpful to move furniture out of the room or cover it with plastic sheets. Removing curtains and blinds from the windows also prevents them from getting dusty.

Clear access to the perimeter of the room is necessary. We need space to place ladders and tools along the walls to reach the ceiling line safely and efficiently.

Factors that affect the work

Ceiling height plays a role in the time required. Higher ceilings may need more equipment and take longer to navigate. The condition of the existing framing or old plaster surfaces also affects how the new cornice sits.

Drying time for the setting compound depends on the weather and ventilation in the home. Other trades, such as electricians or painters, need to be coordinated so the surfaces are not disturbed while the plaster is wet.

What to provide for a quote

Photos are the most helpful tool for a quote. Send a wide shot of the room and a close-up of the current profile. If there is damage, a photo showing the cause, such as a leak, helps us plan the repair.

Include the rough measurements of the room or the length of the damaged section. This allows us to estimate the materials needed and the time required to complete the job.
