Plastering job guide

Acoustic plasterboard & sound-control linings.

Acoustic plasterboard linings use denser, sound-rated plasterboard as part of a wall or ceiling system designed to reduce noise between rooms. The board is fixed and set to suit the specified system, ready for paint. It suits media rooms, bedrooms beside living areas, home offices and shared walls, alongside the right framing and insulation.

Text your suburb, the room or surface, approximate size and photos if useful.

The job in context

Sound performance depends on the complete wall or ceiling assembly, including its framing, insulation, junctions and penetrations. A different board alone does not establish the result. Bring any drawings or performance specification so the lining scope can be discussed against the intended system.

What to discuss

  • Plasterboard linings for a specified acoustic assembly
  • Wall and ceiling details between adjoining spaces
  • Coordination of openings, junctions and penetrations

Common questions

What is included in an acoustic lining job?

Fixing the acoustic plasterboard to the specified framing and layout, sealing and setting the joints, and finishing ready for paint. The sound result depends on the whole system, including framing, insulation and gaps, not the board alone.

How long does it take, and what affects the price?

Acoustic board is heavier than standard board and is often used in more than one layer, and each coat of setting needs drying time, so allow for several visits. The area, the number of layers, the ceiling height and access affect the time and the quote.

What should I send?

Your suburb, the rooms you want to separate, any drawings or system specification, and photos of the walls or ceiling.

Signs you need sound-control linings

You might notice noise from a television or conversation carrying clearly into a bedroom or nursery. In some homes, footsteps or movement on the floor above can be heard throughout the room below. These are signs that the current wall or ceiling assembly lacks the density needed to block sound waves.

Another indicator is the ability to hear plumbing or mechanical noise through a shared wall. When standard plasterboard is not enough, denser linings are used to add mass to the structure. This helps reduce the amount of noise that passes from one living space to another.

The installation process

The work begins with the installation of the denser boards to the wall or ceiling framing. In some systems, two layers of board are used to increase the mass of the barrier. The boards are fixed securely to ensure there are no gaps where sound can leak through.

Once the boards are up, we apply tape and jointing compound to the seams. This setting process involves multiple coats. Each layer must dry fully before the next is applied and sanded. The final result is a flat surface that is ready for your chosen paint.

Preparing the room for work

To help the work proceed, please clear the area of furniture and loose items. Removing curtains and wall hangings allows us to access the edges of the walls and ceilings. This reduces the risk of dust getting on your belongings and gives us a clear workspace.

If the room is part of a renovation, ensure that the framing is complete and any insulation is already in place. Since sound-control systems rely on the whole assembly, having the internal wall structure ready is essential before the linings are installed.

Factors that affect the job

Ceiling height and the total area of the room change the amount of material needed and the time spent on site. High ceilings may require different access equipment. The condition of the existing framing also plays a part, as uneven studs can affect how the boards sit.

Drying times for the jointing compound are a major factor. Humidity and temperature in the room can slow this process. Coordination with other trades is also important, as electrical wiring and plumbing must be finalised before we close the walls with acoustic boards.

What to send for a quote

When asking for a quote, send photos of the current room or the open framing. Include the measurements of the walls or ceilings that need the sound-control linings. This helps us understand the scale of the task and the amount of material required.

If you have a specific system design or a set of plans from a builder, please share those as well. Mentioning the cause of any existing noise issues or the intended use of the room helps us ensure the right lining is discussed for your needs.
